This seems like the season for big screen smartphones and the latest to arrive on our shores (and our office) is the 4.3-inch display toting Konka Expose W960. But will its affordable price and good specs help it to triumph over the competition?
Looks: Pleasantly good
Most of the time, appearance and styling are the first casualties when handset manufacturers set out their stall to make an affordable device. This is why we must confess to being pleasantly surprised when we saw the Expose W960 that is being new member of Konka mobile’s smartphone line-up. It has a 4.3-inch display and comes in all white colour (the unit we received was white), which is not very sleek but still looks smart. There are three soft keys placed below the screen for settings, home and back. However, none of them are physical keys. An 8.0-megapixel camera with dual flash is at the back panel while a 2.0-megapixel camera is present on the front. The back panel also houses the speaker grille and the power on/off key with a 3.5mm audio jack sits on the top panel. The overall looks and build quality of the W960 is definitely good to look at.
Hardware: Decent for the price
The W 960 does not have mind-blowing specs but serves up a decent bang for the bucks it charges. It is powered by a 1GHz dual core processor along with a 512 MB RAM. It has an internal memory of 4GB that is user-available which can be expanded up to 32 GB via microSD card. This is a dual SIM device that can also support 3G. The company also claims that the device can support 3D user-interface, however, we couldn’t test it. On connectivity front, the device includes options like – Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS. The SIM cards and memory card are not hot swappable and one has to remove the battery for it. Speaking of which, the device comes with a 1,800 mAh battery which can easily last a day. Impressive at this price point, we believe.
Software: ICS flavour
We are beginning to get used to the fact that when it comes to Android, most mid-ranged smartphones sport almost similar operating system and apps. But the Konka W 960 unfortunately does not do much in case of the operating system but we loved the tweaks made to the UI. The W 960 runs on Ice Cream Sandwich which might appear old for some tech pundits as Jelly Bean is now around since few months. The home screen consists of five customisable panels, that take of social, multimedia and app needs. Useful widgets can be placed on homescreen as per user’s convenience and needs. Some preloaded apps include Yahoo messenger, WeChat, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook and some company apps like KonkaGene and Konka club. The device also includes some choices for themes that are not bad at all.
Multimedia: Booming experience
We must say that Konka has done justice to this smartphone when it comes to multimedia. The device boasts a 4.3 inch IPS LCD display that is large enough for enjoying videos and playing games. HD videos and games look good enough on the device. However, the audio experience on the earphone was not that great but when we discovered about the Boombox, a heavy accessory that comes along with the box, we were amazed. It delivered some great music and added to our sound experience. The Boombox can be useful at times like when partying at home or having a hangout outdoors with friends.
User Experience: A good one
The Konka W960 is an entertainer. The user-interface is easy to work with and we loved the tweaks made in the standard Android – a few days with the phone and you will know your way through. The voice quality is good and does not crack. We were impressed with the sound quality of Boombox, it is a smart innovation that doesn’t require any power even to amplify music. And while we are not unhappy with ICS, we wonder when this phone will move up to Jelly Bean.
